Panjab University (PU) in Chandigarh recently hosted a significant interaction with globally renowned biodiversity and climate change authority, Professor Kamaljit S Bawa. The meeting was organised by the PU–IIT Ropar Regional Accelerator for Holistic Innovations Foundation. This body operates under the Northern Region Science and Technology Cluster, with direct support from the office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India. Core discussions revolved around enhancing institutional partnerships, pushing forward critical research in biodiversity and climate resilience, and ensuring academic endeavours align with India's strategic priorities.
Interdisciplinary Research is the Need of the Hour
Professor Bawa, with his vast experience spanning over four decades in tropical biology and sustainable development, underscored the intricate connections between biodiversity loss, climate change, and human health. He strongly advocated for an interdisciplinary approach to research, one that is fundamentally driven by policy needs to create tangible impact. His insights are considered vital for shaping India's sustainability roadmap.
A Legacy of Environmental Leadership
Attendees had the privilege of learning from a distinguished figure. Professor Kamaljit S Bawa is not only the founder and former president of the Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE) but also a Padma Shri awardee. He holds the position of Professor Emeritus at the University of Massachusetts Boston and is a Fellow of multiple prestigious scientific academies. Currently, he serves as a key advisor to the Principal Scientific Adviser's office on national initiatives concerning biodiversity and sustainability.
