Kerala Heat Alert: Equinox Drives Temperatures to 37.2°C

Kerala Under Orange Alert as Equinox Phenomenon Triggers Intense Heatwave

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) has issued a critical heat warning for the state, attributing the soaring temperatures to the astronomical Equinox phenomenon expected around March 21. This event, where the sun shines directly above the equator, has led to a significant spike in maximum temperatures, high humidity levels, and an elevated ultraviolet (UV) index across Kerala.

Orange Alert Zones and Record-Breaking Temperatures

An orange level alert has been specifically declared for Konni, Chengannur, Chenganassery, and Munnar, where the UV index reached a dangerous level of 8. Other areas have also reported concerning readings:

  • Thrithala, Ponnani, and Kodakara recorded a UV index of 7.
  • Kamassery, Ollur, Beypore, and Mananthavady saw a UV index of 6.

Temperature records highlight the severity of the situation. Palakkad registered the highest temperature at 37.2°C, while Kottayam experienced a two-degree rise above normal, reaching 36.8°C. Punalur recorded 36.5°C and the highest humidity level of 79%. Kannur Airport reported 35.9°C, and Vellanikkara saw 35.4°C with humidity levels hitting 71%.

Meteorological Factors and Regional Impact

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has identified several weather systems contributing to the heatwave. A trough now extends from north interior Karnataka to the Kanyakumari region, passing through south interior Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, replacing its previous path from Marathwada to north interior Tamil Nadu.

Additionally, an upper-air cyclonic circulation is present over north coastal Tamil Nadu, while another persists over the southeast Arabian Sea along and off the Lakshadweep area. A trough from the southwest Bay of Bengal off the north Sri Lanka coast across the Gulf of Mannar also continues to influence weather patterns.

Minimum temperatures have risen above normal in Malappuram and Kottayam districts, exacerbating discomfort and health risks for residents. The combination of high temperatures, elevated humidity, and intense UV radiation poses significant threats, including heat-related illnesses and skin damage.

Authorities urge the public to take precautions, such as staying hydrated, avoiding direct sun exposure during peak hours, and using protective measures against UV rays. The KSDMA continues to monitor the situation closely, with updates expected as the Equinox event approaches.
