Kerala Biodiversity Board Launches 'Bioshield' Initiative on World Earth Day

In a significant move to commemorate World Earth Day, the Kerala State Biodiversity Board (KSBB) organized the 'Bioshield – Green Commitment Programme' at the Thiruvananthapuram Zoo-Museum compound. This year's Earth Day celebrations were integrated into the broader Green-1000 project, an ambitious initiative focused on planting rare and endangered plant species alongside fruit trees across major institutional compounds in Thiruvananthapuram city.

CSR Funding and Inauguration

The program was formally inaugurated by M C Dathan, who delivered a compelling address highlighting the urgent need for heightened public awareness regarding environmental preservation, biodiversity conservation, pollution reduction, and the adoption of sustainable lifestyles. Dathan emphasized the collective responsibility to safeguard the planet for future generations, setting a poignant tone for the day's activities.

The event commenced with a welcome speech by V Unnikrishnan, a scientific officer at KSBB. Following this, Earth Day messages were shared by several dignitaries, including N Anilkumar, chairperson of KSBB; S Sreekumar, director of JNTBGRI; Manjula Devi, director of Thiruvananthapuram Zoo; Rajesh, the zoo superintendent; Rahul Bhatkoti, CEO of Thiruvananthapuram International Airport; and Sebastian Britto, CSR head at Adani Vizhinjam Port & Airport. Participants then collectively took an Earth Day pledge, reinforcing their commitment to environmental stewardship.

Seminar and Tree Planting Activities

A key component of the event was a seminar titled 'Agasthyamalai Biosphere Reserve – Relevance and Importance,' held at the 3D theatre within the museum complex. N Mohanan, former chief scientist of TBGRI, delivered an informative presentation, shedding light on the ecological significance of the reserve.

The highlight of the program was the planting of saplings from rare and native tree species in the museum compound. Among the varieties planted were Humboldtia sanjappae, Kaara, wild gooseberry, wild jackfruit, Vetti, wild Ashoka, Samudrakkai, Neerpezhu, Neermaruthu, and Aattilippa. This initiative is part of the Green-1000 project, which utilizes Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds from Adani International Airport to support these conservation efforts.

Objectives and Community Impact

N Anilkumar, chairperson of KSBB, articulated the program's dual objectives: to foster greater community involvement in environmental and biodiversity conservation and to actively protect endangered plant species through systematic planting and nurturing. The 'Bioshield' initiative aims to create a green shield around urban areas, enhancing ecological resilience and promoting sustainable urban development.

By integrating CSR funding with public participation, the KSBB's Earth Day event not only celebrated global environmental awareness but also laid the groundwork for tangible, long-term conservation actions in Kerala. This program underscores the state's proactive approach to addressing biodiversity loss and climate change through collaborative efforts between government bodies, private enterprises, and the community.
