Leopard Cub Rescued from Etawah School Dies During Treatment at Safari Park
A tragic incident has unfolded at the Etawah Safari Park in Uttar Pradesh, where a female leopard cub, rescued from a primary school in the Chakarnagar area of Etawah on February 23, 2025, passed away on March 1, 2025, while undergoing medical treatment. The cub had been receiving care after showing signs of limping in one of her legs, but despite continuous efforts by wildlife veterinarians, her condition deteriorated, leading to her death at 3:56 PM.
Rescue and Initial Care
On February 23, 2025, panic erupted when the female leopard cub was discovered on the premises of a primary school in Chakarnagar. Upon receiving the information, a team from the forest department swiftly arrived at the location, successfully rescued the cub, and transported her to the Etawah Safari Park for safety and rehabilitation.
After the rescue, the cub was housed at the Leopard Safari Animal House within the park, where she received dedicated attention from staff. She remained under observation and care in this facility as part of standard wildlife rescue protocols.
Health Issues and Treatment
From February 12, 2025, wildlife veterinarians noticed that the cub was limping in one of her legs, prompting immediate medical intervention. A team of doctors began treating her, but when her condition failed to improve despite ongoing efforts, she was transferred from the Animal House to the Wildlife Hospital three days prior to her death for more intensive care.
On the morning of March 1, 2025, the leopard cub appeared lethargic, raising concerns among the medical team. Doctors continued to treat her under close observation, but unfortunately, she succumbed to her condition later that afternoon.
Investigation and Post-Mortem
Following the incident, the park administration has initiated a post-mortem procedure in accordance with established rules to determine the precise cause of death. Anil Kumar Patel, the Director of Etawah Safari Park, stated that the actual cause can only be confirmed after the post-mortem report is available.
"The entire matter is currently under investigation," said Patel, emphasizing the need for a thorough examination to understand the circumstances leading to the cub's demise. The forest department and park authorities are collaborating to review the rescue and treatment processes to ensure better outcomes for future wildlife interventions.
This incident highlights the challenges faced in wildlife rescue and rehabilitation efforts, particularly for young animals in distress. It serves as a reminder of the importance of prompt and effective medical care in such cases, as well as the ongoing need for conservation measures to protect endangered species like leopards in India.
