The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has documented a substantial temperature decline, with daytime readings falling to 16°C on Tuesday. This represents a notable four-degree deviation below the seasonal average, signaling a pronounced intensification of winter conditions across the district. Meteorological stations recorded 3.2mm of precipitation by evening, as overcast skies and persistent drizzle kept most residents confined indoors throughout the day.
Cold Wave and Fog Warnings Issued
Weather experts are expressing serious concerns about the dangerous combination of elevated moisture content and rapidly falling temperatures. This atmospheric setup has created ideal conditions for what meteorologists describe as a severe "cold wave" accompanied by hazardous visibility challenges. Humidity measurements showed a concerning increase from 90% during morning hours to 96% by evening, prompting official warnings of "dense to very dense fog" expected to persist through January 30th.
Pavneet Kaur Kingra, who heads the climate change and agricultural meteorology department at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), emphasized the need for public preparedness. "Current weather patterns are highly conducive for both cold wave conditions and dense fog formation beginning tomorrow," Kingra stated. "We strongly advise farmers and general citizens to exercise extreme caution, particularly during early morning hours when visibility could be severely compromised."

The IMD's comprehensive fog alert has raised substantial concerns regarding transportation networks throughout the region. Authorities anticipate potential disruptions affecting road transportation, railway schedules, and air traffic operations across the next 72-hour period.
