Madikeri Villagers Stage Protest Against Illegal Resort and Luxury Villa Project
In a significant environmental standoff, villagers from Bittangala village near Virajpet in Madikeri have launched a vigorous protest against the construction of a resort and luxury villas project. The demonstration highlights growing concerns over illegal land use and the potential for catastrophic natural disasters in the region.
Environmentalist Warns of Legal Action Over Illegal Project
Prominent environmentalist Colonel (Rtd) Muthanna has strongly condemned the project, labeling it as illegal and issuing a stern warning. He stated that if the construction work is not halted immediately, legal action will be pursued to enforce compliance with environmental regulations.
Allegations of Rule Violations and Illegal Permissions
Protesters have raised serious allegations against local officials, accusing them of enabling the project by granting permissions that blatantly violate established rules. They argue that the land in question cannot be legally converted for commercial purposes, and that large-scale construction is being carried out without proper authorization in this sensitive hilly area.
Severe Threat of Landslides and Past Subsidence Incidents
The villagers have expressed grave concerns about the project posing a serious threat to Bittangala village. They pointed out the area's high vulnerability to landslides, referencing past incidents of land subsidence on the same hill. The protesters warned that continued construction activities could endanger or even destroy the entire village, given the unstable geological conditions.
Violation of High Court Order and Government Bans
In their protest, the villagers alleged that the district administration has violated an order from the high court. They also referred to the devastating 2018 Kodagu landslide disaster, after which the government imposed a ban on all construction work in landslide-prone areas. This historical context underscores the urgency of their demands for immediate action.
Call for Political Intervention and Urgent Action
Activist Rajeev Bopaiah has called upon local MLAs to intervene in the matter and ensure that appropriate measures are taken to halt the illegal construction. The protest underscores a broader community demand for accountability and the protection of their village from environmental and safety hazards.
