Maharashtra Heatwave Intensifies: Amravati and Akola Cross 40°C Mark

Nagpur: The onset of intense summer conditions has gripped Maharashtra's Vidarbha region, with Amravati and Akola emerging as the hottest places on Thursday. Both cities crossed the critical 40°C threshold for the first time this season, signaling a sharp surge in temperatures across the area.

Record-Breaking Temperatures and Heatwave Declarations

According to the latest observations released by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Amravati recorded the highest maximum temperature in the region at a scorching 40.8°C. This reading was a staggering 6.3°C above the normal seasonal average, prompting the IMD to officially declare heatwave conditions (Day 1) in the Amravati district.

Close behind was Akola, which registered a maximum temperature of 40.7°C. This represented a departure of +5.1°C from the normal, leading to similar heatwave conditions being declared in this district as well. The simultaneous crossing of the 40°C mark in these two cities underscores the severity of the early summer heat.

Widespread High Temperatures Across Vidarbha

Several other districts in the Vidarbha region reported unusually elevated temperatures, contributing to the broader heatwave scenario:

  • Wardha recorded 40.0°C, which was 4.4°C above normal.
  • Chandrapur registered 39.2°C, marking a +2.8°C departure.
  • Yavatmal reported 39°C, a significant 4.5°C above the seasonal norm.
  • Nagpur, the region's major urban center, experienced a maximum temperature of 38.7°C, approximately 4.3°C above the average.

Additional locations in the region, including Brahmapuri, Bhandara, and Gondia, recorded temperatures hovering close to 39°C, indicating near-heatwave conditions that are affecting a wide geographical area.

Dry Weather and Forecast for Further Temperature Rise

With dry weather prevailing across Vidarbha and no rainfall recorded in the past 24 hours, meteorological officials have issued warnings that temperatures are likely to climb even higher over the coming days. This persistent dry spell, combined with the absence of cooling precipitation, creates ideal conditions for heat accumulation.

The IMD has cautioned that this trend could significantly increase the likelihood of heatwave conditions spreading to more districts within the Vidarbha region. Residents are advised to take necessary precautions, such as staying hydrated, avoiding direct sun exposure during peak hours, and monitoring vulnerable populations like the elderly and children.

The early arrival of such intense heat underscores the broader climatic challenges facing the region and highlights the importance of timely weather advisories from authorities like the IMD.
