Mumbai Coastal Forest Advocates Present Vision at Climate Week Event

Members championing the creation of a Mumbai Coastal Forest along the undeveloped open spaces adjacent to the Coastal Road presented their nature-forward vision for the city's coastline during Mumbai Climate Week. The group established a dedicated stall to showcase their ambitious proposal for ecological transformation.

Visual Renderings and Immersive Experience Highlight Proposal

The advocates displayed detailed visual renderings illustrating how these open spaces could be converted into publicly accessible areas fundamentally rooted in principles of ecological restoration. To enhance the immersive experience and demonstrate the potential for biodiversity creation, the stall featured recordings of birds chirping played through a music system, offering visitors an auditory glimpse of the envisioned natural environment.

Mamta Dalal Mangaldas, a core team member of the Mumbai Coastal Forest initiative, emphasized the city's unique opportunity. "This city has a rare opportunity to set a benchmark for meaningful green cover," she stated. "What Mumbai needs is a layered, native forest that cools the city, cleans the air, supports biodiversity and remains genuinely accessible to all citizens."

Background on Coastal Road Development and Open Spaces

The proposal gains context from existing development plans. In May of last year, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) entered into a partnership with Reliance Industries to develop approximately 70 hectares of open space that has been reclaimed along the route of the coastal road project. The advocates' vision presents an alternative, ecologically focused approach for utilizing this significant area.

The presentation at Mumbai Climate Week underscores a growing public discourse on balancing urban infrastructure development with environmental sustainability and creating meaningful, restorative green lungs within the metropolitan landscape.
