Navi Mumbai Residents to Stage Silent Protest Against Tree Removal for Road Project

The Palm Beach Greens Forum, a collective of local residents in Navi Mumbai, is set to organize a silent human chain protest in front of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) headquarters on Tuesday. This two-hour demonstration aims to save 440 trees that are slated to be affected by a proposed subway road construction underneath Palm Beach Road in Sanpada sector 19.

Details of the Road Project and Environmental Impact

The underpass, planned at the Moraj circle area by the NMMC, is intended to alleviate traffic congestion for the Sanpada and Juinagar nodes from Palm Beach Road. However, the project involves transplanting 329 trees and axing 111 trees, a move that has sparked significant opposition from locals and joggers in the area. Residents have been vocal in their disapproval of the tree relocation and cutting proposal, urging authorities to consider alternative options to preserve the green cover.

Protest Organization and Community Appeal

The forum has made a heartfelt appeal to the public to unite for the city's environment and safeguard their future. In preparation for the event, applicants have approached the NRI Coastal Police Station to secure permission for the protest. This will mark the second human chain protest of its kind, following a similar demonstration near the tunnel road site earlier.

Protest Format and Convener's Statement

Shrikant Patki, the convener of the protest, outlined in the application that a small group of citizens will stand in a single line at the NMMC headquarters in Belapur. Participants will hold placards and banners, respectfully requesting authorities to explore alternative solutions that would retain all 440 trees. Emphasizing the peaceful nature of the protest, Patki assured that no slogans will be raised, and there will be no obstruction to traffic or public movement during the event.

The protest underscores growing community concerns over urban development projects that threaten local ecosystems, highlighting a broader call for sustainable planning in Navi Mumbai.
