In a significant move to fortify Assam's defenses against annual deluges, the foundation for a cutting-edge multi-purpose flood shelter was ceremonially laid in Majuli district on Friday. The bhumi pujan ceremony took place at Bengana Kalia village, marking a pivotal step in bolstering the disaster response infrastructure for the vulnerable river island community.
A Versatile Haven for Majuli's Residents
This crucial project is being executed under the Assam Integrated River Basin Management Project (AIRBMP), a flagship state initiative dedicated to mitigating flood risks and building long-term resilience across Assam. Officials present at the event emphasized the shelter's dual-purpose design.
Meenakshi Das Nath, the Additional CEO of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) who also serves as the AIRBMP Project Director, addressed the gathering. She outlined the vision for the facility, stating it is conceived as a versatile asset for the local population. While its primary and most critical function will be to offer a safe refuge for citizens during the monsoon floods, the shelter's utility will extend year-round as a hub for various community activities and gatherings.
Community Participation Key to Success
Ratul Chandra Pathak, the District Commissioner of Majuli, highlighted the strategic importance of such infrastructure in a topographically sensitive and flood-prone region like Majuli. He pointed out that the project's success hinges not just on construction but on active community involvement. Pathak stressed that community participation and vigilant monitoring will be essential to ensure the shelter is completed on schedule and utilized effectively for its intended purposes.
