Odia Volunteers Rally to Assist Stranded Indians During West Asia Crisis

In the midst of escalating tensions and air strikes across West Asia, which led to widespread flight cancellations and overcrowded hotels, a group of Odia expatriates has emerged as a beacon of hope for Indians stranded in the region. Operating under the banner of the International Odia Foundation, these volunteers have stepped forward to provide crucial assistance to those caught in the crossfire of the Israel-Iran conflict.

Immediate Relief for a Stranded Worker in Dubai

One of the first beneficiaries of their efforts was a blue-collar worker in Dubai, who found himself unable to depart the city after his work contract ended due to sudden flight cancellations. Prasanta Meher, a Dubai-based member of the foundation, detailed the situation, stating, "He was set to leave Dubai but could not. We have made arrangements for his accommodation until he is able to fly out." This intervention highlights the foundation's commitment to offering practical support in times of distress.

Expanding Support Across the Region

The International Odia Foundation, established to aid people in need across 20 countries, including seven in West Asia, has been actively monitoring the crisis. Meher also visited an Odia family and a woman traveling from Mumbai to New York, both stranded in Dubai, to offer reassurance and assistance. "It is very traumatizing for people being stranded in a foreign land during a war. I visited them to allay their fears and provide them with whatever help they required," he explained, noting that their flight operator had already arranged for their stay.

Food and Counseling in Kuwait

In Kuwait, Biswaranjan Sahoo, an officer with an oil and gas company and a foundation member, provided food to eight workers for a day after they fled their camps in fear. Hailing from Puri, Sahoo said, "I counseled them to return to their accommodation and assured them of help in case of need." This gesture underscores the foundation's holistic approach, combining material aid with emotional support to mitigate the psychological impact of the conflict.

Coordinating Evacuation Efforts

Looking ahead, members of the organization are preparing a list of individuals who wish to leave the affected countries. Pratap Nayak, based in Jubail, Saudi Arabia, outlined their plan: "We shall provide the list to the Indian embassy and help them fly out of the country when flights resume." This proactive measure aims to streamline evacuation processes once normalcy returns, ensuring that stranded Indians receive timely assistance from official channels.

The efforts of the Odia community during this crisis exemplify the power of diaspora networks in providing humanitarian aid. As tensions in West Asia continue to disrupt travel and daily life, such initiatives offer a vital lifeline to those in vulnerable situations, reinforcing the importance of community solidarity in times of global uncertainty.
