Uttarakhand's Higher Reaches Witness Unusual April Snowfall, Disrupting Pilgrimage Preparations
In a surprising turn of weather for April, the higher altitudes of Uttarakhand, encompassing the sacred Char Dham districts, were blanketed with fresh snowfall on Wednesday. Simultaneously, relentless rainfall drenched Dehradun and various other regions of the state starting Tuesday night, driven by the influence of a potent western disturbance. Meteorological officials have noted that while snowfall in April is not entirely without precedent, such occurrences are relatively rare and can lead to temporary travel disruptions in elevated areas. On a positive note, this unexpected weather event is anticipated to enhance the snow cover in the upper Himalayan zones just ahead of the Char Dham yatra, which is slated to commence on April 19.
Widespread Rainfall and Meteorological Insights
According to detailed reports from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), extensive rainfall was documented across Uttarakhand between the night of April 7 and the morning of April 8. The rainfall measurements revealed significant precipitation in several key locations: Tehri received the highest amount at 59 mm, followed by Chakrata with 36 mm, Mussoorie and Kotdwar each recording 32 mm, and Dehradun registering 19 mm. The regional meteorological centre highlighted in its daily weather report issued on Wednesday that thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, snowfall, hail, and gusty winds were observed at isolated places over Uttarakhand.
CS Tomar, the director of the regional meteorological centre, provided further context, explaining that temperatures had plummeted by 4-6°C over the preceding week. This significant drop created optimal conditions for snowfall in the higher Himalayan regions. This spell is due to a strong western disturbance and its impact is likely to persist till Thursday morning, Tomar stated, adding that a gradual rise in temperatures is expected thereafter.
Snowfall Impact and Logistical Challenges
Snowfall was reported in areas situated above 3,500 metres in the districts of Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, and Pithoragarh, reintroducing wintry conditions amidst the spring season. Notably, the Kedarnath shrine experienced snow accumulation reaching up to three to four feet, while Yamunotri in Uttarkashi and Auli in Chamoli also received heavy snowfall. This sudden weather shift has posed considerable logistical challenges for local authorities, complicating essential preparations for the impending pilgrimage.
Officials confirmed that ongoing work on critical arrangements—including electricity, water supply, medical facilities, security, and the repair of roads and routes leading to the four shrines—has been impeded by the adverse weather. Vishal Mishra, the district magistrate of Rudraprayag, emphasized, The foremost priority is to clear the snow at the shrine and on the trek route. Only thereafter can other important works be carried out. He further elaborated that repairing damaged medical relief points remains a key challenge, with supplies, shop setups, and mule movement also being adversely affected. Despite these hurdles, Mishra expressed confidence, stating, Our teams are active and we are confident of completing all work before the pilgrimage begins.
Pilgrimage Plans and Temperature Drop
Hemant Dwivedi, the chief of the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee, assured that the yatra will proceed as scheduled despite the weather-related obstacles. Advance teams of SDRF, police, and administration have already reached the area and preparations are ongoing. However, the snowfall and rain have made the task more challenging, he remarked, highlighting the concerted efforts to ensure a smooth pilgrimage experience.
Meanwhile, the combined effect of rainfall in the plains and snowfall in the hills resulted in a sharp decline in temperatures across Uttarakhand on Wednesday, prompting residents to revert to woollen clothing. In Mukteshwar, the maximum temperature was recorded at a mere 6°C—approximately 15 degrees below the seasonal norm—while the minimum dipped to 4.5°C. Tehri Garhwal experienced night temperatures around 5°C, and in Dehradun, the daytime temperature settled at 23°C, nearly eight degrees below the usual average for this time of year.
