Telangana's Integrated Forest Fire Strategy Shows Dramatic Results

The forest department in Hyderabad has implemented a comprehensive, technology-enhanced approach to combat forest fires, combining advanced early warning systems, substantial field deployment, and preventive infrastructure. With an allocation of ₹35.5 crore, officials report that this integrated strategy has already reduced reported fire points by approximately 50% compared to the previous year. Monitoring and response operations now function continuously, from forest ranges to a central control cell.

Season-Long Operation with Multi-Pronged Approach

Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Head of Forest Force) C Suvarna emphasized that fire management is being treated as a season-long operation. "Prevention, detection, and response are all being strengthened together, with field staff and local communities working in tandem," Suvarna stated. This collaborative effort aims to create a robust defense against wildfires throughout vulnerable periods.

Extensive Preventive Measures and Infrastructure

On the preventive front, the department has maintained 21,739 kilometers of fire lines and excavated 11,000 kilometers of peripheral trenches to contain potential blazes. Surveillance capabilities have been significantly expanded with the erection of 73 watch towers at strategic vantage points across forested areas.

Firefighting equipment has been distributed extensively, including:

  • Blowers for controlling fire spread
  • Rakes and spades for creating firebreaks
  • Fire beaters for direct suppression

Additionally, protective gear such as safety clothing, boots, and helmets has been supplied to ensure the safety of personnel involved in firefighting operations.

Advanced Technology Integration

The department has incorporated cutting-edge technology into its fire management strategy. Two thermal drones, procured during the 2024-25 period, have been stationed at the Amrabad Tiger Reserve and Kawal Tiger Reserve. These drones are specifically deployed to detect hotspots and track fires at their earliest stages, enabling quicker intervention.

A state fire monitoring and control cell now operates 24 hours a day, receiving complaints and alerts through multiple channels:

  • Helpline numbers: 1800 425 5364 and 1926
  • A dedicated WhatsApp number for rapid reporting

Ground Deployment and Community Involvement

On the ground, 45 quick response teams equipped with vehicles have been deployed in vulnerable forest ranges during peak fire months. The department is also utilizing 174 base camp watcher units, each comprising five members, along with more than 200 animal trackers in wildlife areas to enhance surveillance and early detection.

This multi-faceted approach represents a significant advancement in forest fire management, combining traditional methods with modern technology to protect Telangana's valuable forest ecosystems.
