In a remarkable display of environmental consciousness, residents of Sidhapur village in Uttar Pradesh's Pratapgarh district redefined wedding traditions by organizing a complete bicycle procession for a marriage ceremony on Sunday evening.
The Green Wedding Initiative
Approximately 15 baraatis, including groom Diwakar Tiwari, pedaled their way through a 3-kilometer route from Sidhapur village in Mandhata block to the bride's residence located on Bhagwatganj Road. The unique procession, dubbed as 'Harit Baraat' by villagers, turned heads and captured local attention as it passed through the area.
The brain behind this environmental initiative was environmental activist Ajay Krantikari, who successfully convinced Tiwari and his family members to embrace this eco-friendly approach for their wedding celebrations. Instead of the conventional luxury vehicles typically used in Indian wedding processions, the wedding party chose bicycles as their mode of transportation.
Community Response and Environmental Message
Local onlookers enthusiastically captured images and videos of the unusual procession on their mobile phones, expressing appreciation for the environmental awareness effort. The sight of well-dressed wedding guests pedaling bicycles instead of traveling in decorated cars became the talk of the village.
Groom Diwakar Tiwari emphasized the importance of their decision, stating: "We should focus on renewable energy sources instead of luxury vehicles in order to check rising AQI." He highlighted the urgent need to reduce unnecessary expenses and ostentatious displays during marriage ceremonies, making weddings more meaningful and environmentally responsible.

Activist Ajay Krantikari expressed satisfaction with the initiative's success, noting that "although the baraatis were limited in number, the initiative was appreciated by all." He confirmed that their primary objective of spreading awareness about curbing unnecessary marriage expenses had been successfully achieved.
Krantikari further emphasized the broader environmental implications, adding: "To save fuel and protect our environment, we have to take such steps."
