Varanasi Shatters Global Record with Massive Tree Plantation Drive
In a monumental display of environmental commitment, the city of Varanasi has officially broken the world record for the most saplings planted in a single hour. On Sunday, a massive collaborative effort led by the Varanasi Municipal Corporation (VMC) resulted in the planting of an astounding 251,446 saplings, decisively surpassing the previous record held by China.
A New Benchmark in Environmental Conservation
The previous Guinness World Record was set on March 10, 2018, by China's Henan Provincial Committee and Henan Shifange Greening Engineering Company, who managed to plant 153,981 saplings within sixty minutes. Varanasi's achievement not only eclipses this figure by nearly 100,000 saplings but also marks a significant milestone in urban forestry initiatives.
The record-breaking event took place in the trans-Ganga areas between Sujabad and Domari, where the VMC had ambitiously targeted planting 3.17 lakh saplings across 350 bigha of land. Although the full target was not met within the hour, the 251,446 saplings planted were more than sufficient to secure the new world record.
Collective Effort for a Greener Future
This historic accomplishment was made possible through the collective efforts of thousands of participants, including:
- The Indian Army
- National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel
- Local police forces
- Thousands of enthusiastic students
- Various dignitaries and community members
Participants began gathering early in the morning, driven by the goal of establishing an 'Oxygen Bank' and documenting this pivotal moment in environmental history. The plantation drive officially commenced at 8 am, under the watchful eyes of the Guinness World Records team.
Official Recognition and Monitoring
The record was formally certified by Guinness World Records judge Rishi Nath, who presented the certificate to Mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari and Municipal Commissioner Himanshu Nagpal. Every aspect of the plantation was meticulously monitored by adjudicator Rishi Nath and world record strategist Nishchal Barot to ensure compliance with Guinness standards.
This initiative is not just about breaking records; it represents a strategic step toward developing Kashi's first urban forest and creating what is poised to become the world's largest Miyawaki forest zone in the Domari area, located on the opposite bank of the city's mythological ghats.
The Miyawaki method, known for creating dense, native forests in a short time, will transform this region into a significant green lung for Varanasi, contributing to biodiversity, carbon sequestration, and improved air quality for future generations.
