Centenarian Reflects on a Life of Resilience
Kundan Singh Madaan, a resident of Jalandhar and a survivor of the 1947 Partition, will mark his 100th birthday on Wednesday, July 1, 2026. Born on July 1, 1926, in Kasoor tehsil of Lahore district (now in Pakistan), Madaan was among the millions displaced during the Partition. Forced to abandon his home and belongings, he arrived in India and started anew from scratch.
Railway Career and Financial Independence
Madaan joined the Indian Railways on October 31, 1947, just months after the Partition. He served the department for nearly 37 years, retiring on June 30, 1984. He credits his railway pension for providing financial security and enabling a dignified post-retirement life. Married in 1948, he has two daughters and three sons, all married and well-settled. His family plans to celebrate his milestone birthday with close relatives and friends.
Secrets to Longevity: Simple Living and Positivity
At 100, Madaan attributes his good health to a simple vegetarian diet, abstinence from alcohol and intoxicants, regular walking, and a positive attitude. He never learned to ride a bicycle and preferred walking throughout his life. His philosophy is rooted in 'Sarbat Da Bhala' (welfare of all) and secularism. Reflecting on his journey, Madaan says he has no regrets, feeling blessed with good health, a supportive family, financial stability, and social respect.
