Australian Man Charged with Premeditated Murder of Teen in Pattaya
An Australian national has been formally charged with premeditated murder and concealment of a body following the death of a 17-year-old girl in the eastern Thai tourist city of Pattaya, police confirmed on Tuesday. The charge of premeditated murder carries a potential death penalty under Thai law.
The suspect, identified as Simon Peter Carman, was arrested early Saturday at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport as he attempted to board a flight to Perth, Australia. He was initially charged with rape of a minor. The discovery of the girl's body inside a suitcase shortly after his arrest led to the additional charges.
Sequence of Events: Security Footage Reveals Movements
The teenager was reported missing on Friday. Police revealed that security footage captured her walking into a condominium with Carman in Pattaya, a popular beach destination approximately 150 kilometers east of Bangkok. The footage showed Carman later leaving the building alone, carrying a large dark-colored suitcase. He was then seen loading the suitcase onto a motorbike and riding to a deserted area along the railway tracks, according to local police.
Additional security footage shared by Thai media allegedly showed Carman holding hands with the girl as they entered an elevator in the early hours of Thursday morning. Later that night, he was seen leaving the building alone with the suitcase. Another video circulated online depicted Carman being questioned by police.
Suspect's Statements and Legal Proceedings
During police questioning, Carman made statements captured on video. He told investigators, "I was holding her down because she got crazy." He further claimed that the girl threatened him while he attempted to give her 500 baht (approximately USD 15). "I had my wallet open to get the money out, and next thing there's a knife to my face," he said.
According to Pattaya Police investigator Kanoknan Sooksri, who is handling the case, Carman has denied all charges. He remains in custody and has been provided with an attorney. It is not immediately clear when he will appear in court.
Investigation and Evidence
The suitcase containing the girl's body was found shortly after Carman's arrest. Police have not released details of the cause of death pending forensic examination. The case has drawn significant media attention in Thailand and Australia due to the nature of the crime and the involvement of a foreign national.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the girl's disappearance and death. The charge of premeditated murder, if proven, could result in the death penalty, though capital punishment in Thailand is rarely carried out in practice.
