Bihar Mock Civil Defence Drill in Six Districts in May

Patna: To strengthen civil defence preparedness in Bihar, a major mock drill will be conducted across the state in the third week of May. During the exercise, air raid and blackout situations will be simulated in six districts, including Patna, Kishanganj, Begusarai, Purnia, Araria, and Katihar.

Preparations Underway on MHA Directives

Preparations have begun on the directions of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. A review meeting with district magistrates and police officials of the concerned districts was held at the Disaster Management Department (DMD) on Thursday. The DMD secretary, Chandrashekhar Singh, chaired the meeting via video conferencing.

Singh stated, “Sirens will be sounded at a fixed time during the drill. As soon as the siren sounds, power in the areas will be cut to create a blackout. The aim is to check how quickly and effectively the administration and public respond in an emergency.” The secretary directed officials to ensure that siren arrangements are completed on time across all districts. If required, sound systems at public squares, police stations, and fire brigade vehicles may also be used.

Safety Measures and Public Awareness

Instructions have also been issued to curtain hospital windows and implement other safety measures during the drill. Officials have been asked to inform the public in advance to ensure that the sirens do not cause panic. Civil Defence Directorate DG Paresh Saxena said, “Begusarai district performed very well in the last exercise. This time too, all districts have been asked to prepare better.”

He added that schools, colleges, chemists, and social organisations should be included in the exercise. The mock drill is aimed at testing administrative readiness during emergencies as well as increasing public awareness to remain alert. The exercise will evaluate coordination among various departments and the response of citizens during simulated crisis scenarios.
