As the monsoon session of the Maharashtra legislature commenced, the state government highlighted looming water stress and agrarian challenges. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, accompanied by Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar, addressed the media, stating that the government has already issued instructions to conserve water.
Government's Water Conservation Measures
Fadnavis emphasized that the state is taking proactive steps to mitigate water scarcity. He noted that instructions have been given to all departments to implement water-saving measures, including efficient irrigation techniques and rainwater harvesting. The government is also working on interlinking rivers and improving dam management to ensure adequate supply for drinking and farming.
Agrarian Concerns and Farmer Support
The agrarian sector in Maharashtra faces multiple challenges, including erratic rainfall, depleting groundwater levels, and rising input costs. The government has announced a package to support farmers, including subsidized seeds, fertilizers, and access to credit. Fadnavis stated, "Our priority is to ensure that farmers get timely support and that we reduce their distress."
Monsoon Session Agenda
The monsoon session is expected to discuss key issues such as water scarcity, farmer welfare, and the state's economic recovery. The opposition has demanded a detailed debate on the agrarian crisis and has criticized the government's handling of water resources. The session will also address legislative business, including bills related to irrigation and land use.
According to official data, Maharashtra has received 20% less rainfall than average this year, raising concerns about kharif sowing. The government is monitoring the situation closely and has set up a control room to coordinate relief efforts.
