The family of 18-year-old Romanch Mahajan is grappling with grief after he died in a tragic accident in New York's Central Park. The teenager fell from a horse-drawn carriage and succumbed to his injuries. Now, his family faces the daunting task of repatriating his body to their hometown of Pathankot for the final rites.
Details of the Incident
Romanch's grandfather, Suresh Mahajan, a resident of Indira Colony in Pathankot, recounted the harrowing event. The teenager had traveled to the United States with his parents and younger brother for a short visit. "They were enjoying a sightseeing ride when, within moments, everything changed," he said.
The accident occurred when the carriage overturned after colliding with another buggy. "My daughter-in-law fell first, followed by Romanch," Suresh Mahajan added. The family had been looking forward to meeting his daughter, who lives in New York, but tragedy struck before the reunion could take place.
How the Accident Unfolded
According to US media reports, the family was riding a traditional horse-drawn carriage near the Cherry Hill area of Central Park. The horse became spooked and bolted, causing the carriage to speed towards West Drive. It eventually crashed into another buggy near the Tavern on the Green restaurant. The impact overturned the carriage, throwing Romanch onto the concrete road and leaving him critically injured. He was rushed to a hospital but could not be saved.
Family's Struggle to Bring Body Home
The family is now completing the necessary formalities to repatriate Romanch's body. "We hope to return with Romanch's body by Sunday evening so his last rites can be performed in Pathankot," Suresh Mahajan said. The process involves coordination with US authorities and airlines to transport the remains.
A Promising Life Cut Short
Romanch had scored over 90% in his Class XII examinations and had recently secured admission to a university in Jaipur. His untimely death has left his family and community in shock. Friends and relatives have gathered at the family home in Pathankot to offer condolences.
Community Support
The local community in Pathankot has rallied around the Mahajan family, offering support and assistance. Local leaders have also extended their help in expediting the repatriation process. The family remains hopeful of bringing Romanch's body back soon to perform the last rites according to their traditions.
