Amravati: In a tragic discovery, three Indian gaur and another animal were found dead in the forest near Harisal in Melghat on Thursday afternoon. The carcasses were discovered in a jungle patch near Chaurakund, prompting immediate action from the forest department.
Forest Department Responds
Officials confirmed that forest department personnel were alerted after the carcasses were spotted. A team rushed to the location and conducted a panchanama, a detailed on-site investigation. Veterinary doctors were also summoned to assist in the process.
Cause of Death Under Investigation
Initial suspicion points to poisoning as the cause of death, but forest officers have stated that the exact reason will be confirmed only after an autopsy. The area has been cordoned off to prevent any further incidents, and samples have been collected for forensic analysis.
The deaths have raised concerns among wildlife conservationists, as Indian gaur are listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Melghat Tiger Reserve, part of the larger Melghat forest, is a critical habitat for several species, including tigers, leopards, and sloth bears.
Forest officials have assured that a thorough investigation is underway to determine whether the poisoning was accidental or intentional. Patrols in the area have been intensified to prevent similar occurrences.
