Israel's U.N. envoy Danny Danon defended Israel's military operations in Lebanon on Tuesday, asserting that Hezbollah's persistent attacks left Israel with no alternative but to respond. Speaking at the United Nations Security Council, Danon accused Hezbollah of serving Iranian interests and holding Lebanon hostage, while continuing to launch rockets and drones at northern Israel despite ongoing ceasefire efforts.
Danon's Statement at the UN
Danon emphasized that Israel does not seek to acquire Lebanese territory and remains committed to U.S.-mediated negotiations with Lebanon. However, he issued a stern warning: as long as Hezbollah sustains its attacks, Israel will strike wherever it deems necessary to protect its citizens. He reiterated that Hezbollah's actions are destabilizing the region and undermining any chance for peace.
Hezbollah and Iranian Influence
According to Danon, Hezbollah operates as a proxy for Iran, which exploits Lebanon for its own geopolitical agenda. He stated that the group has effectively taken the Lebanese state hostage, preventing it from achieving sovereignty and stability. The envoy called on the international community to recognize the threat posed by Hezbollah and to support efforts to disarm the group.
Ceasefire and Diplomatic Efforts
Despite the ongoing violence, Danon confirmed Israel's willingness to engage in diplomatic talks mediated by the United States. He stressed that a lasting solution requires Hezbollah to cease all hostilities and comply with UN resolutions. Until then, Israel reserves the right to self-defense under international law.
The remarks come amid heightened tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border, with sporadic exchanges of fire threatening to escalate into a broader conflict.
