Security forces in Manipur have launched a major operation to disarm civilians in the wake of escalating violence between Kuki and Naga tribal groups. The operation resulted in the recovery of 36 weapons, including assault rifles and an improvised sniper rifle, as authorities seek to prevent further bloodshed.
Weapons Recovered in Disarmament Drive
The recovered arsenal included 17 single and double barrel guns, two AK-47 rifles, two SLRs, one M4 Carbine, one SKS rifle, and one improvised sniper 303 rifle. The operation targeted areas affected by the ongoing Kuki-Naga conflict, which has claimed multiple lives since mid-May.
May 13 Abductions Spark Conflict
The current cycle of violence began on May 13 when several Nagas were allegedly abducted by Kukis from Leilon Vaiphei Kuki village. The situation deteriorated further when the bodies of six abducted Nagas were discovered on June 11, prompting retaliatory attacks.
Retaliatory Violence and Casualties
Following the recovery of the six Naga bodies, two Kukis were killed in retaliation, raising the total death toll to eight. The discovery of the bodies intensified tensions between the two communities, leading to clashes and the imposition of an economic blockade.
Economic Blockade on National Highway
The United Naga Council enforced an indefinite inter-district "economic blockade" on National Highway 2, which connects Imphal with Nagaland via Kangpokpi. The blockade has disrupted essential supplies and movement, further straining the region's fragile peace.
According to official sources, the disarmament operation aims to prevent further escalation and restore order. The security forces continue to maintain a presence in sensitive areas to deter violence and ensure the safety of all communities.
