Odisha Bans Strikes in Power Sector Amid Summer Heatwave

The Odisha government has imposed a ban on strikes in power sector establishments across the state under the Odisha Essential Services (Maintenance) Act, 1988. The decision, announced by the energy department on Friday, aims to ensure uninterrupted generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity.

Reason for the Ban

The step was taken in view of the severe summer and heatwave conditions affecting various parts of the state. Electricity is crucial for people, as well as for hospitals, industries, and other sectors, an energy department official stated.

Government Order Details

A home department order dated May 21 declared that the state government is satisfied that it is necessary to prohibit strikes connected with electricity generation, transmission, and distribution in all establishments of GRIDCO, OPTCL, OHPC, OPGC, four power distribution companies, and any other power generating organizations in the state. The purpose is to maintain industrial peace and optimize power generation, transmission, and distribution.

Under the ESMA, strikes are prohibited in these essential services. A strike is defined as the cessation of work by a body of persons employed or engaged in any essential service. The order will remain in force for a period of six months.
