Attack on Sindh Rangers Bhittai Wing
Six people were killed in a terrorist attack on a paramilitary compound in Karachi, Pakistan, on Saturday evening. The assault targeted the Sindh Rangers Bhittai wing in the densely populated Gulistan-e-Jauhar area around 8:30 pm local time. According to officials, the attackers rammed a vehicle into the main gate of the facility before opening fire.
Details of the Incident
The attack began when a vehicle loaded with explosives crashed into the compound's entrance, causing a powerful blast. Following the explosion, armed terrorists attempted to storm the facility but were met with resistance from Rangers personnel. A firefight ensued, lasting approximately 30 minutes. Security forces neutralized the attackers, but six people, including two Rangers personnel and four civilians, lost their lives. At least 15 others were injured and taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Security Response and Investigation
Karachi police and counter-terrorism units quickly cordoned off the area. A search operation was launched to locate any additional suspects. Senior police official Dr. Aamir Shaikh stated, "The attackers used a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device to breach the perimeter. Our forces responded swiftly to prevent a larger tragedy." The area remains under tight security as investigators collect evidence and review CCTV footage.
Impact on Local Residents
The Gulistan-e-Jauhar neighborhood, a bustling residential and commercial district, was thrown into panic. Residents reported hearing a loud explosion followed by gunfire. Many families were forced to stay indoors as security operations continued late into the night. Local hospitals appealed for blood donations to treat the wounded. The attack has raised concerns about the resurgence of militant activity in Karachi, which had seen a relative decline in violence in recent years.
Government Condemnation
Pakistan's Interior Minister condemned the attack, calling it a "cowardly act of terrorism." He assured that security forces would bring the perpetrators to justice. The Sindh government announced compensation for the families of the deceased and free medical care for the injured. No group has claimed responsibility yet, but officials suspect the involvement of militant networks operating in the region.
