A tragic incident occurred in the Sundarbans on Thursday when a 37-year-old woman, Bandana Das, was killed by a tiger while she was catching crabs in the forested creeks of the Chulkathi jungle. Bandana, a resident of Kultali in South 24 Parganas, had set out on a fishing trip with her husband Gautam two days earlier in a country boat.
Details of the Attack
According to locals, Bandana was cooking at one end of the boat when the tiger suddenly pounced on her. Hearing the commotion, Gautam rushed to the deck and saw the animal dragging his wife away. He screamed for help, and nearby fishermen quickly came to assist. Although they managed to drive the tiger back into the forest, Bandana had already suffered severe injuries to her neck and back.
Rescue Attempt and Aftermath
Bandana was rushed toward the mainland for medical treatment, but she succumbed to her injuries on the way. She is survived by her husband and two daughters, who are students in classes X and VIII.
This incident highlights the ongoing conflict between humans and wildlife in the Sundarbans region, where locals often venture into tiger habitats for livelihood.
