Woman from South Sudan Tested for Ebola in Kottayam

A woman who recently returned from South Sudan has been transferred to Kottayam Medical College for Ebola testing after exhibiting symptoms of fever and vomiting. Health officials reported that the woman visited a private hospital in Pala on Wednesday following the onset of fever.

Hospital Alert and Transfer

Due to her travel history from an Ebola-affected region, the private hospital alerted the health department, which promptly arranged for her transfer to the isolation ward at Kottayam Medical College. Blood samples have been collected and dispatched to a laboratory to determine if she is infected with the Ebola virus, according to news agency PTI.

Minister's Statement

State Health Minister K Muraleedharan confirmed that the woman traveled alone from South Sudan via Uganda. After experiencing symptoms including vomiting, she initially sought treatment at a private hospital. “Due to her symptoms, she was shifted to the isolation ward at Kottayam Medical College. We are yet to receive the test results,” he stated.

Muraleedharan added that the superintendent of the medical college reported that preliminary examinations do not indicate anything alarming at this stage. The health department had previously issued an alert to hospitals across Kerala to closely monitor travelers arriving from African nations. Officials have confirmed that all necessary preparations, including the procurement of PPE kits, have been made.

This development underscores the vigilance required to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. The health department continues to monitor the situation closely and has urged the public to remain calm. Further updates will be provided once test results are available.
