Dubai Missile Alert Triggered by Mistake, UAE Retracts Warning

Authorities in the United Arab Emirates issued an incoming missile alert for Dubai on Friday evening, only to retract it within minutes, telling the public to disregard the warning. The brief text message from the UAE's Interior Ministry, sent just after 5:15 pm local time, was the first such alert during the ongoing Iran war and appeared to be triggered by error.

The mobile phone alert startled many residents in Dubai, a city that had not experienced such warnings in weeks since a ceasefire in the war. Officials did not immediately explain what caused the alert, and the Interior Ministry provided no further details.

Timing Amid Regional Tensions

The false alarm came as Iran is suspected of launching a drone attack against a tanker off the coast of Oman on Thursday. Tehran has been increasingly challenging the region and the United States over its control of the Strait of Hormuz, even with the current interim deal in place.

Shortly after the alert, the UAE disclosed a telephone call between Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. According to a statement, Sheikh Abdullah told Araghchi that the UAE "emphasised the importance of full commitment" to the interim deal between Iran and the United States.

"Serious diplomacy and responsible dialogue are the optimal path for addressing all regional and international crises," the UAE foreign minister said during the call.

Impact and Context

The incident highlights the fragile security environment in the Gulf region, where miscommunication can escalate tensions. The UAE, a key U.S. ally, has maintained diplomatic channels with Iran despite the war. The quick retraction of the alert suggests a desire to avoid panic and further instability.

Residents in Dubai reported receiving the alert on their phones, causing brief confusion. The authorities' prompt clarification helped restore calm. The UAE has not commented on whether the alert was related to the suspected drone attack or any other specific threat.
