A fatal train collision occurred approximately 60 miles north of London on Friday evening, resulting in one death and numerous injuries, according to British Transport Police.
Details of the Incident
Emergency services were dispatched around 5:15 p.m. local time to the railway line south of Bedford, where two East Midlands Railway trains were involved in a crash. A video shared on social media by a passenger depicted the front of one train entangled with the rear of another, with carriages remaining upright on the tracks.
Casualties and Response
One person was pronounced dead at the scene. The East of England Ambulance Service reported that 11 individuals sustained very serious injuries, 22 were seriously injured, and 56 had minor injuries. A large number of crews were deployed, including over 20 ambulances and six air ambulances.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his condolences, stating: “My thoughts are with the family of the person who has sadly lost their life, and with those who have been seriously injured.”
Investigation Underway
Deputy Chief Constable Stuart Cundy confirmed that a significant emergency response is ongoing as authorities work to determine the cause of the collision. Dr. Peter Knapp, a passenger on one of the trains, described a “sudden crash” on social media platform Bluesky, noting that one carriage derailed and he sustained minor injuries.
