Pakistan announced on Monday that security forces had killed 29 terrorists in a series of military strikes conducted along the border with Afghanistan. The operations targeted hideouts of militant groups accused of orchestrating cross-border attacks.
Details of the operation
According to a statement from the Pakistani military, the strikes were carried out in the tribal districts of North and South Waziristan, which have long been strongholds for militant factions. The operations involved ground forces and air support, resulting in the destruction of multiple militant hideouts and the seizure of weapons and ammunition.
Pakistan has consistently accused the Taliban regime in Kabul of providing safe havens and support to terrorist groups, including the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and other factions. Islamabad claims these groups use Afghan soil to plan and launch attacks inside Pakistan.
Cross-border tensions
The latest strikes come amid heightened tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan. In recent months, Pakistan has witnessed a surge in terrorist attacks, which it attributes to the lack of action by the Taliban government against militant groups operating from Afghan territory. A senior Pakistani security official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, "The Taliban regime must fulfill its commitments and prevent its soil from being used against Pakistan."
The Afghan Taliban government has denied the allegations, insisting that it does not allow any group to use Afghan territory for attacks against other countries. However, Pakistan remains unconvinced and has ramped up its military operations along the border.
Impact on regional stability
Analysts warn that the continued cross-border violence could destabilize the region further. The United Nations and other international bodies have called for dialogue between the two neighbors to resolve their differences. The Pakistani military stated that it remains committed to eliminating terrorism and will continue operations to ensure the security of its citizens.
No immediate comment was available from the Afghan government regarding the latest strikes. The area along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border remains volatile, with frequent clashes between security forces and militant groups.
