Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on Saturday that a peace agreement between the United States and Iran is on the verge of finalisation, with a deal expected within the next 24 hours. Speaking on the progress, Sharif stated that technical-level negotiations would follow the electronic signing of the accord.
Shehbaz Sharif's Statement on Social Media
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sharif wrote: "We are closer to a peace deal than ever before. With finalisation likely expected in the next 24 hours, Pakistan is preparing for the electronic signing of the peace deal immediately after, followed by technical-level talks next week." He expressed gratitude to the United States and Iran for their commitment during negotiations and thanked regional allies for their support. "We are confident that this historic peace deal will form a strong foundation for lasting peace," he added.
Diplomatic Engagements
Pakistan's Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also held a conversation with Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis, who conveyed optimism regarding the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran. The Pakistani Foreign Ministry posted on X: "Welcoming the encouraging progress towards an understanding between the United States and Iran, they expressed hope that ongoing efforts would soon contribute to peace and stability in the region. Both sides agreed to remain in close contact."
US Official Confirms Iran's Commitment
A senior Trump administration official stated on Friday that under the proposed agreement, Iran has committed to never develop or acquire nuclear weapons. Sanctions relief would be contingent upon strict verification and inspections. The official noted that the deal has support from regional partners, including Israel and Gulf countries. "We feel quite confident that all of our allies – the Israelis and the Gulf coalition – will get on board. Obviously, that doesn't mean they give up the right to self-defence, and if Iranians don't honor their end of the obligation, I wouldn't expect the Israelis to not respond," the official said.
This development marks a significant step towards reducing tensions in the Middle East, with Pakistan playing a mediating role in the negotiations.
