Pakistan has prevented a cargo ship from sailing out of its waters after it collided with another vessel outside the Karachi Port, officials confirmed on Thursday.
Collision Details
The incident occurred late Wednesday night when the cargo ship, identified as the MV Ocean Star, struck the MV Sea Breeze while maneuvering near the port's entrance. The collision caused significant damage to both vessels, but no injuries or casualties have been reported.
Response and Investigation
Port authorities immediately launched an investigation and ordered the MV Ocean Star to remain anchored at the port until a full assessment is completed. The Pakistan Maritime Security Agency (PMSA) has cordoned off the area to facilitate salvage and inspection operations.
According to a PMSA spokesperson, the collision may have been caused by a navigational error or mechanical failure. The crew of both ships are being questioned, and the cargo manifests are being reviewed to rule out any illegal activities.
Impact on Port Operations
The incident briefly disrupted traffic at the Karachi Port, one of Pakistan's busiest ports. However, operations have since resumed with additional safety precautions. The port authority has deployed extra tugboats to assist vessels in the area.
Local shipping experts have raised concerns about the increasing frequency of such accidents in the region, calling for stricter enforcement of maritime safety protocols. The Pakistan government has assured that it will take necessary measures to prevent future incidents.
The damaged vessels are expected to undergo repairs at the port's dry docks. The cost of damages is yet to be estimated.
