Talks between the United States and Iran are set to begin on Sunday, June 21, 2026, after both delegations arrived at the Swiss mountain resort of Burgenstock. The Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed the arrival on X, stating: "The US delegation, led by US Vice-President JD Vance, the Iranian delegation, led by the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, and the mediators, Pakistan and Qatar, have arrived at the Burgenstock. Talks between the parties are set to begin today."
Strait of Hormuz Remains Closed Amid Tensions
Meanwhile, the Strait of Hormuz remains closed, according to a military source speaking to Iran's Fars News Agency. The agency reported that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy is not issuing any permits for vessel passage until further notice. This step is described as the first response to a "breach of promise," with further measures planned if aggression continues.
Diplomatic Engagements and Regional Reactions
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi met Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis in Burgenstock during the delegation's first official engagement in Switzerland. The meeting focused on bilateral and regional issues. Separately, on Sunday, Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon engaged in a heated exchange with UN Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict Vanessa Frazier after she interrupted his remarks regarding allegations of sexual violence by Israeli soldiers and settlers against Palestinians.
Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baqaei, condemned the incident on X, calling it "a shameful exhibition of arrogant defiance" and accusing the regime of continuing a "genocidal campaign against the Palestinian people." He urged the world to confront this "grave, unprecedented threat to peace and humanity."
