Former US President Joe Biden launched a scathing attack on President Donald Trump during a fundraising gala hosted by the Maryland Democratic Party in Hanover, labeling Trump a 'loser' and accusing his administration of systemic corruption, procedural failures, and prioritizing personal vanity over national governance.
Biden Targets Trump's Capital Projects
Biden scrutinized several construction and remodeling projects in Washington, DC, including modifications to the White House East Wing, proposed frameworks for a triumphal arch, and the high-profile overhaul of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. He argued that Trump's efforts to reshape the capital's visual landscape exemplify distorted executive priorities and defective leadership.
Referring to Trump's persistent attempts to re-engineer Washington's landmarks, Biden said, 'Whoa! What a loser.' He specifically criticized the allocation of a lucrative, non-competitive contract for the Reflecting Pool's new water filtration system, which was awarded to a Trump campaign donor who resides near Mar-a-Lago in Florida.
Corruption Allegations and January 6 Pardons
Biden also condemned Trump's efforts to financially or institutionally compensate individuals convicted of participating in the January 6, 2021, assault on the US Capitol, who were subsequently granted presidential pardons. 'It's the corruption, the corruption, the brazen, blatant corruption. Corruption on a scale never seen before in American history in any administration,' Biden said.
Foreign Policy and NATO Criticism
Turning to international affairs, Biden heavily criticized Trump's foreign policy, particularly his diplomatic alignment with Russian President Vladimir Putin following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Biden asserted that Trump's actions have structurally undermined NATO and compromised Washington's historical alliances. 'He's diminished our standing in the world more than any president in history has,' Biden said.
Political Timing and 2024 Election Context
The speech occurred exactly two years after Biden's widely criticized televised debate performance against Trump, which ultimately triggered his withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race. Following that withdrawal, Trump secured a second term by defeating Biden's endorsed successor, then Vice President Kamala Harris, in the November 2024 election.
