In a tragic turn of events, Geetik, a 21-year-old youth from Rohera village in Kaithal, Haryana, who traveled to Russia in March 2025 in search of a better life, was killed in the war against Ukraine. His body was recently cremated in his home village after months of uncertainty and official confirmation through DNA testing.
Journey to Russia and Induction into the Army
Geetik embarked on his journey to Russia in March 2025, driven by the hope of improving his family's financial condition. He spent a significant amount of money to make this move, aiming to secure a brighter future for his loved ones back in India. However, his aspirations took a devastating turn when he was inducted into the Russian Army nine months ago, following basic training, to participate in the ongoing conflict with Ukraine.
Family's Struggle and Confirmation of Death
The family lost contact with Geetik in September 2025, prompting them to inquire about his whereabouts. Initially, they were informed that he was missing, but after persistent efforts, they received the heartbreaking news of his death. According to Shri Ram, Geetik's uncle, the family was notified by a Russian official that Geetik had died on the battlefield approximately six months ago.
To confirm the identity of the body, DNA samples from Geetik's father, Amit Shastri, were sent to Russia in November 2025. The subsequent DNA match provided conclusive evidence, confirming that Geetik had indeed perished in the war. His body was finally repatriated to India on Thursday night, leading to his last rites being performed on Friday in Rohera village.
