In a pointed political jab, Hunter Biden, son of former US President Joe Biden, has mockingly nominated Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, targeting the administration's repeated claims of ending the conflict with Iran.
Hunter Biden's Sarcastic Nomination
Taking to social media platform X on July 2, 2026, Hunter Biden wrote: "I am officially nominating Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) for the Nobel Peace Prize. No President in History has ended the same war so many times." He added that, according to CNN, Trump had declared victory over Iran at least 38 times, and that Trump was "nowhere near finished ending it."
Trump's Claims on Iran Operations
Trump has consistently portrayed the US military engagement with Iran as a decisive success. He stated that American and allied strikes dismantled Iran's conventional military power, destroying its navy, knocking out its air force, and degrading its missile and air-defense infrastructure. Trump also claimed the operation obliterated Iran's nuclear program, preventing the country from developing a nuclear weapon.
Diplomatic Context and Strait of Hormuz Tensions
The exchange occurs as Washington and Tehran attempt to turn a recent Memorandum of Understanding into a permanent peace treaty. However, tensions remain high, particularly over the Strait of Hormuz, which handles nearly 20% of global seaborne petroleum trade. Iran has ordered commercial ships to follow only Iranian-sanctioned transit routes, threatening a "forceful response" against violators.
US Ambassador to the UN, Mike Waltz, countered that such restrictions constitute "global blackmail" and cannot be justified as self-defense under international law. Iran's UN Ambassador, Amir-Saeid Iravani, blamed US military presence in the Persian Gulf for instability and warned that Tehran would exercise its right to self-defense if attacked.
