Secret Service Agent Suspended Over Alleged Security Information Leak
A US Secret Service agent responsible for protecting Vice President JD Vance now faces suspension and investigation. The agency placed Tomas Escotto on administrative leave after allegations surfaced that he disclosed sensitive job-related information.
Security Clearance Revoked During Investigation
The Secret Service confirmed it suspended Escotto's security clearance immediately. Officials also revoked his access to all agency buildings and computer systems. These actions came as an internal investigation began into the serious allegations against the agent.
"The US Secret Service has no tolerance for any behavior that could potentially compromise the safety, privacy or trust of our protectees," Deputy Director Matthew Quinn stated clearly. He emphasized the agency takes such matters with utmost seriousness.
Allegations of Sensitive Information Disclosure
According to reports from James O'Keefe's media organization, Escotto allegedly shared multiple types of sensitive security information. The purported leaks included:
- Shift schedules for protective details
- Security formation patterns
- Travel itineraries for protected individuals
- Real-time location data
Reports further claim Escotto shared future travel plans several days in advance. In one instance, he allegedly sent photographs from aboard Air Force Two while the vice president traveled on the aircraft.
Agent Believed He Was Speaking to Romantic Interest
The situation developed when Escotto reportedly believed he was sharing information with a casual romantic interest. Unknown to him, the woman was covertly recording their conversations for a media organization. Despite having signed confidentiality agreements prohibiting such disclosures, the agent allegedly shared details repeatedly.
"Despite acknowledging that he signed paperwork prohibiting the disclosure of sensitive information, the Secret Service agent repeatedly shared details with someone he believed was a casual romantic interest," stated the report detailing the alleged actions.
Secret Service Responds with Training Mandate
In response to this incident, the Secret Service has ordered all personnel to retake mandatory anti-espionage training. Deputy Director Quinn explained this measure aims to ensure employees remain aware of threats from individuals seeking to exploit them for information about protective operations.
Quinn highlighted the agency's 160-year legacy of discretion, making clear it will not tolerate personnel who fail to meet these standards. He offered a formal apology to the Vance family for the violation of their trust and privacy.
Limited Public Information About Agent
Because of standard security protocols, the Secret Service does not release background profiles on active agents. This policy leaves limited public information available about Tomas Escotto.
Reports indicate Escotto served as a holdover from the previous administration and reportedly voted for President Joe Biden. His exact role within Vice President Vance's security detail remains unspecified due to security considerations.
The agency has committed to taking all necessary steps to prevent similar breaches from occurring in the future. Officials stress they treat the confidence protectees place in the Secret Service with the highest level of seriousness.
