In a startling incident that has raised serious concerns about public transport safety, a San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) train operator allegedly fell asleep while driving a packed light-rail coach, triggering panic among commuters during morning rush hour.
The Terrifying Moment When Sleep Took Over
The incident occurred at 8:37 am on September 24 when the fatigued train operator momentarily dozed off at the controls. The train was traveling at nearly 80 kilometers per hour (50 mph) as it exited a tunnel and navigated a curve. The result was a violent lurch that sent several standing passengers stumbling into walls and onto the floor.
Newly surfaced CCTV footage captures the precise moment when the driver's eyes appear shut and her head leans to one side, coinciding with the sudden jolt that startled everyone on board. The train subsequently sped past its scheduled stop before coming to an abrupt halt a short distance ahead.
Immediate Aftermath and Passenger Reactions
The startled driver can be heard attempting to calm anxious passengers, repeatedly apologizing and saying, "Relax... we didn't crash." Despite the dramatic nature of the incident, authorities confirmed that no derailment or injuries were reported.
Emergency services responded promptly, with paramedics rushing to the scene. The SFMTA immediately launched a comprehensive investigation into what caused the frightening episode.
