Times Square Ball to Drop Twice in 2026 for America's 250th Birthday
Times Square July Ball Drop for US 250th Birthday

In an unprecedented move, the iconic Times Square Ball in New York City will descend not once, but twice in 2026 to celebrate the United States' 250th birthday. The official committee for the nation's Semiquincentennial has announced a historic dual celebration that will bookend a monumental year for America.

A Dual Celebration for a Historic Milestone

The celebrations, orchestrated by the official nonpartisan organisation America250, will feature the world-famous Ball in two landmark events. First, it will follow its traditional role on New Year's Eve 2025, ringing in the Semiquincentennial year at midnight. Then, in a stunning first, it will drop again on July 3, 2026, to anchor nationwide Independence Day festivities.

This marks the very first time in history the Times Square Ball will be used for a public event outside of the annual New Year's Eve celebration. Organisers state this underscores the central role New York City will play in the 250th-anniversary commemorations.

New Year's Eve Kickoff with a Surprise Ceremony

The festivities commence on December 31, 2025. After the traditional midnight drop to welcome 2026, a surprise second ceremonial moment will unfold. At approximately 12:04 a.m. EST on New Year's Day, the Ball will be relit in a special red, white, and blue design commissioned by America250 and rise above illuminated "2026" numerals.

This post-midnight event will include:

  • A special video presentation titled "America Turns 250."
  • The release of 2,000 pounds of red, white, and blue confetti.
  • A pyrotechnic finale set to Ray Charles' iconic rendition of "America the Beautiful."

Rosie Rios, Chair of America250, emphasised the global stage, calling Times Square "the most watched celebration on the planet" and expressing a goal to inspire all 350 million Americans to join the moment.

The Historic Summer Ball Drop on July 3

The centrepiece of the summer celebrations will be the July 3, 2026, Ball drop. This unique event is designed to signal the culmination of the Semiquincentennial year's Independence Day observances across the country.

The collaboration for these milestone moments involves America250, One Times Square, and the Times Square Alliance. Michael Phillips, President of Jamestown (owner of One Times Square), noted the location's history as a global stage for historic moments, making it a fitting launchpad for the anniversary. Tom Harris, President of the Times Square Alliance, confirmed this partnership ensures the first moment of 2026 kicks off a year-long series of events honouring 250 years of American history.

America250 is the official organisation designated by the U.S. Congress to lead the 250th-anniversary commemorations of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. It is guided by the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission and its nonprofit partner.
