The Tamil Nadu government has urgently approached the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to facilitate the repatriation of a young Indian's body from Cambodia. The deceased, a 22-year-old from Coimbatore, tragically passed away after a harrowing experience involving cyber fraudsters.
A Tragic End After Rescue
D Nandakumar, aged 22, a resident of LIC Colony in Selvapuram, Coimbatore, had been working in a hotel in Cambodia for about a year. His family's ordeal began one and a half months ago when he was reportedly abducted by cyber fraudsters. In a glimmer of hope, officials from the Indian embassy successfully rescued him on Tuesday and admitted him to a hospital for care.
However, in a devastating turn of events, Nandakumar passed away at the Cambodian hospital on Wednesday. The exact cause of his death has not been detailed in the initial reports.
Family and State Government Spring into Action
Grieving and seeking closure, Nandakumar's family approached the Coimbatore district administration on Thursday, pleading for assistance in bringing his mortal remains back home. The state machinery swiftly responded to their distress.
On Friday morning, the Non-Resident Tamils Welfare Board took charge of the matter. The board's chairman, Karthikeya Sivasenapathy, confirmed the proactive steps being taken. He stated that the board has formally reached out to the MEA and is committed to ensuring the body is brought back to India within the next few days.
State Assures Full Financial Support
In a significant relief to the bereaved family, Chairman Sivasenapathy clearly announced that the Tamil Nadu state government will bear all expenses involved in the repatriation process. This assurance removes a potential financial burden from the family during an immensely difficult time and underscores the state's role in supporting its citizens abroad.
The case highlights the vulnerabilities faced by Indian nationals seeking employment overseas and underscores the critical role of Indian diplomatic missions and state welfare boards in providing timely intervention and support during crises.
