Trump Renews Push for US Acquisition of Greenland Citing National Security
Trump Renews Push for US to Acquire Greenland

Former US President Donald Trump has once again advocated for the United States to acquire Greenland. He made this push on Wednesday, emphasizing the Arctic island's critical importance for American national security.

The Golden Dome Defense System

Trump specifically linked Greenland to what he calls the "Golden Dome" defense system. He claims Washington is building this system. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated clearly that the United States needs Greenland for national security purposes. He declared it vital for the Golden Dome project.

NATO's Role and Warnings

Trump argued that NATO should take the lead in ensuring Greenland comes under US control. He issued a stark warning. If Washington does not act, he believes Russia or China will move in. Trump stated firmly that such an outcome is not going to happen on his watch.

He directly connected Greenland's future to NATO's military strength. Trump claimed the alliance would be far less effective without the vast power of the United States. He wrote that NATO would not be an effective force or deterrent without America. He added that NATO would become far more formidable and effective with Greenland in US hands. Trump concluded by saying anything less than that is unacceptable.

Fresh Tensions with Denmark and Greenland

These remarks come amid renewed tensions. Greenland's Prime Minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, recently reaffirmed the island's commitment to Denmark. He rejected the idea of becoming a US territory. Trump responded dismissively to this stance. He said that's their problem and that he disagrees with them. Trump added that Nielsen's position would be a big problem for him personally.

Speaking in Copenhagen alongside Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Nielsen outlined Greenland's choice. He said the island had decided to stand with Denmark, stressing unity within the Danish kingdom. While political debate continues in Greenland, some voices there argue that remaining under Denmark within NATO's security framework is the wiser long-term option.

Dismissing Current Defenses

Trump has repeatedly dismissed Denmark's role in Greenland's defense. He insists the island's current defenses are inadequate. Trump claims Greenland is vulnerable to Russian and Chinese naval activity. He argues that full US ownership is essential for effective defense. Leases or limited military access are not enough, in his view.

While acknowledging the US already has bases and personnel on the island, Trump calls this insufficient without full control. Denmark, meanwhile, describes the situation as a decisive moment. The Danish government reiterates that Greenland is not for sale. They firmly reject Washington's advances.

Military Contingency Plans

The rhetoric has raised alarm within US military circles. According to reports, Trump has asked senior special forces commanders to prepare contingency plans. These plans are for a possible invasion of Greenland. This move has reportedly faced resistance from top military officials. They are concerned about the legality and political feasibility of such an action.

Central to Security Strategy

Despite the pushback, Trump continues to frame Greenland as central to US and NATO security. He warns that Washington will not allow Russia or China to gain a foothold on the Arctic island. The former president maintains his position that control of Greenland is a non-negotiable element of American defense strategy.
