In a tense incident that has further inflamed national debates over immigration enforcement, US federal agents shot and wounded two individuals in Portland, Oregon, on Thursday afternoon. The event occurred just one day after a separate, fatal shooting involving immigration officers in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Details of the Portland Shooting Incident
According to police statements, the shooting on Thursday, sometime after 2:00 PM local time, involved agents from the US Border Patrol. The location was near Adventist Health Portland, a hospital complex in southeast Portland, approximately eight miles from the city centre.
A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security, Tricia McLaughlin, stated that the agents were conducting a "targeted vehicle stop." The situation escalated when, according to the agents, the driver attempted to run them over. In response, one agent fired a shot.
The driver subsequently fled the scene. Police later located two people with gunshot wounds a short distance away. Emergency Medical Technicians transported a man and a woman to nearby hospitals. Reports from emergency radio communications indicated both victims were Spanish speakers. The woman sustained a chest wound, while the man was reported to have been shot twice.
Official Statements and Investigation
Portland Police Chief Bob Day appealed for calm, acknowledging the heightened emotions following the Minneapolis tragedy. "We understand the heightened emotion and tension many are feeling... but I am asking the community to remain calm as we work to learn more," he was quoted as saying.
At an impromptu news conference, Nathan Vasquez, the District Attorney for Multnomah County, confirmed the presence of the FBI and Portland police at the scene. He did not specify which agency was leading the investigation.
The DHS spokesperson alleged that the targeted individual was an immigrant described as being in the country illegally and a member of Tren de Aragua, a gang originating from a Venezuelan prison. US President Donald Trump has frequently focused on this group. However, no immediate evidence of the alleged gang affiliation was provided by officials.
Escalating Tensions and Political Reactions
The Portland shooting has intensified an already volatile atmosphere, coming on the heels of the Wednesday shooting in Minneapolis where a 37-year-old woman was killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer.
Local and state leaders urgently called for peace. US Senator Jeff Merkley (D-Ore) implored, "Please keep protests peaceful. Trump wants to generate riots. Don’t take the bait."
Portland Mayor Keith Wilson issued a strong statement, accusing federal agents of bringing violence to the city. "We cannot sit by while constitutional protections erode and bloodshed mounts," he stated, urging ICE to suspend all operations in Portland pending the investigation's completion.
The twin shootings in Minneapolis and Portland have sparked fresh debates about the conduct and scope of federal immigration enforcement operations within American cities, with community leaders fearing further escalation.
