Singapore, June 18: Carro, Asia Pacific's leading online automotive marketplace, has announced the acquisition of CarPlace, a prominent Australian used car platform. This strategic move grants Carro a physical presence in three of Australia's four largest markets in a single transaction.
Details of the Acquisition
CarPlace is a key player in the used car sales sector, operated by Autoleague, one of Australia's largest automotive groups. Autoleague will remain a strategic shareholder in CarPlace and has also joined Carro as a strategic investor. This partnership aims to deliver a hassle-free, trustworthy experience and end-to-end ecosystem benefits for both dealers and retail customers.
Technology and AI Integration
With this acquisition, Carro plans to scale up its digital capabilities by deploying proprietary technologies and workflows in vehicle inspections, inventory tracking, asset management, leads management, customer experience, lifecycle management, and dealer networks. Aaron Tan, Co-Founder and CEO of Carro, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating: "We've found an ideal strategic partner in Autoleague to power our ambitions in Australia and we're really excited about the potential to grow into a leading business in Australia."
Tan highlighted that Australia is one of the largest used car markets in Asia Pacific, with consistent annual sales of 2.3 million used cars and fast-growing EV penetration. He believes the market is ripe for a platform like Carro to transform the used car landscape through technology and AI.
Expansion of Wholesale Operations
Beyond strengthening pre-owned retail, Carro expects to grow its wholesale operations. The company is now one of the few Asia Pacific players capable of serving the Japan-Australia import corridor. Tan emphasized the importance of building and maintaining a strong dealer network, noting Carro's track record of partnering with local dealers to support growth. He expressed confidence in Carro's wholesale capabilities, thanks to its presence in Japan, which positions the company to bring popular pre-owned and brand new Japanese models to Australian customers.
Strategic Partnership with Autoleague
Dan Kawai, Managing Director and CEO of Autoleague, commented: "It's really a fantastic opportunity to partner and be a strategic shareholder in Carro. We've seen Carro's technology infrastructure, streamlined operations and unwavering commitment to transparency within the industry, and we're confident in their goal to become a leading player in Australia and the top choice for customers." Kawai affirmed Autoleague's support for Carro's ambitions in Australia and commitment to working closely together.
