Global Factors Impacting Gold
Internationally, gold prices edged lower on Friday due to a stronger dollar and hawkish signals from the US Federal Reserve. Spot gold fell 0.5 percent to USD 4,189.26 per ounce, while US gold futures for August delivery dropped 0.9 percent to USD 4,207.80.
Gold Imports Drop Significantly
India's gold imports have plummeted by nearly 70 percent to 25–30 tonnes following the doubling of customs duty to 15 percent, as stated by a Finance Ministry official on June 18. This is a sharp decline from the earlier range of 75–100 tonnes per month.
Despite the drop in volume, India's gold imports in May increased by 34 percent year-on-year to USD 3.41 billion, driven by rising precious metal prices.
