Disney Announces Josh D'Amaro as New CEO, Replacing Bob Iger

The Walt Disney Company has officially concluded its search for a new leader, naming Josh D'Amaro as its next Chief Executive Officer. D'Amaro, who currently serves as Chairman of Disney Experiences, will take over from Bob Iger on March 18, 2024, marking a significant leadership transition for the world's most famous entertainment empire.

Ending the Post-Iger Leadership Uncertainty

This appointment comes at a crucial time for Disney, which has faced challenges in establishing stable leadership following Iger's initial departure. According to reports, this represents the second time in six years that Disney's board has selected a successor for Iger. The previous choice, Bob Chapek, was ousted in 2022, prompting Iger's unexpected return from retirement to stabilize the company's corporate governance.

To ensure a smoother transition, Iger will remain with Disney as a senior advisor and board member until his final retirement date on December 31, 2026. This extended involvement is designed to provide continuity and support during the leadership changeover.

Iger's Endorsement of His Successor

Bob Iger expressed strong confidence in his successor, stating: "Josh D'Amaro is an exceptional leader and the right person to become our next CEO. He has an instinctive appreciation of the Disney brand, and a deep understanding of what resonates with our audiences, paired with the rigor and attention to detail required to deliver some of our most ambitious projects. His ability to combine creativity with operational excellence is exemplary."

Iger added that he is "thrilled for Josh and the company" regarding this appointment, highlighting D'Amaro's qualifications and vision for Disney's future.

D'Amaro's Disney Journey and Vision

Josh D'Amaro, 54, brings extensive experience to the CEO role, having served as Chairman of the Disney Experiences segment since 2020. Prior to that position, he was President of Walt Disney World Resort. His Disney career began in 1998 at Disneyland Resort, giving him over 25 years of experience within the company.

Upon his appointment, D'Amaro expressed gratitude and outlined his vision: "I am immensely grateful to the Board for entrusting me with leading a company that means so much to me and millions around the world. Disney's strength has always come from our people and the creative excellence that defines our stories and experiences."

He emphasized his commitment to both honoring Disney's legacy and driving innovation: "There is no limit to what Disney can achieve, and I am excited to work with our teams across the company and brilliant creative partners to honor Disney's remarkable legacy while continuing to innovate, grow, and deliver exceptional value for our consumers and shareholders."

D'Amaro also thanked Iger for his "generous mentorship, his friendship, and the profound impact of his leadership" during their years working together.

Additional Leadership Changes at Disney

Alongside the CEO transition, Disney has announced other significant leadership appointments. Dana Walden, currently co-chairman of Disney Entertainment, has been named president and chief creative officer of The Walt Disney Company, also effective March 18.

As Co-Chairman of Disney Entertainment, Walden has been responsible for leading Disney's globally recognized entertainment media, news, and content businesses, including the company's streaming operations. Her promotion represents another strategic move in Disney's executive restructuring.

These leadership changes come as Disney continues to navigate the evolving entertainment landscape, balancing traditional media with digital streaming platforms and global expansion. The appointments signal a new chapter for the entertainment giant as it seeks to build on its legacy while adapting to changing consumer preferences and technological advancements.
