Prime Minister Narendra Modi commissioned three indigenously-built Indian Navy platforms — INS Dunagiri, INS Sanshodhak, and INS Agray — in Kolkata, marking a significant milestone in India's maritime capabilities and the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
Indigenous Design and Construction
Designed by the Navy's Warship Design Bureau and constructed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE), these vessels feature over 75% indigenous content. The project involved support from more than 200 Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), showcasing India's growing self-reliance in defense manufacturing.
Capabilities of the New Vessels
- INS Dunagiri: A BrahMos-equipped stealth frigate designed for enhanced maritime combat operations.
- INS Sanshodhak: An advanced survey vessel for hydrographic surveying, crucial for navigation safety and oceanographic research.
- INS Agray: An anti-submarine warfare craft specialized in detecting and neutralizing underwater threats.
The induction of these platforms strengthens India's naval power, improving its ability to protect sea lanes, conduct surveillance, and respond to maritime challenges. The event underscores the government's commitment to the Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision, promoting indigenous defense production and reducing dependency on foreign imports.
