Madurai: The first rail coach restaurant (RCR) in the Madurai division of Southern Railway has been established at Rameswaram railway station. Divisional railway manager Om Prakash Meena inaugurated the facility on Friday.
Sustainable Use of Railway Assets
Decommissioned railway coaches are being recycled and converted into restaurants instead of being scrapped. This initiative promotes sustainable use of railway assets while offering passengers and visitors a nostalgic railway dining experience.
Design and Ambience
The interiors have been redesigned with comfortable seating, decorative lighting, wooden panelling, and a themed ambience that evokes the charm of train travel.
Services and Operations
The restaurant operates round the clock, providing various cuisines, snacks, and beverages. Travellers can dine before boarding trains or order takeaway meals. The RCR prepares food through modernised base kitchens equipped with CCTV monitoring and FSSAI-compliant food handling practices.
Existing Rail Coach Restaurants
Currently, rail coach restaurants operate at Chennai Central, Potheri, Trichy, Thanjavur, and Coimbatore stations across Southern Railway.
