Cops suspended for drunken argument during festival duty

Dindigul: A special sub-inspector and a constable were suspended on Friday after they allegedly consumed alcohol and engaged in a heated argument with members of the public while on security duty during a festival near Palani. The incident occurred at Gorikadavu, where the annual temple festival at the Karuppanasamy temple is underway, drawing thousands of devotees daily from surrounding areas.

Special Sub-Inspector (SSI) Sakthivel and constable Parthiban, both attached to the Keeranur police station, were assigned bandobast duty at the event. According to a source, the two police personnel were intoxicated and became involved in a verbal altercation with the public. Some bystanders recorded the argument on their mobile phones and subsequently shared the video clip on various social media platforms.

After the video came to the attention of district Superintendent of Police S. Jeyakumar, he immediately placed the SSI and the constable under suspension. The SP has also ordered a departmental inquiry against both officers, the source added. The incident has sparked outrage among locals, who demanded strict action against the errant officers.
