Adani Group to Commence Rs 70,000 Crore Coal Gasification Project in Nagpur This Year

The Adani Group is set to initiate construction on its ambitious Rs 70,000 crore integrated coal gasification and downstream derivatives plant at Linga in Kalmeshwar, near Nagpur, within this year. This venture is highlighted as a pivotal step in the company's clean energy portfolio, aimed at advancing India's industrial capabilities.

Massive Investment and Job Creation

Jeet Adani, director of Adani Defence and Aerospace, announced that the Rs 70,000 crore investment covers the first phase of the project, with plans for a second phase involving an equivalent amount in the future. The project is projected to generate approximately 30,000 jobs, significantly boosting local employment and economic growth in the Vidarbha region.

Adani emphasized that this initiative will develop advanced chemical manufacturing capabilities, reducing India's dependence on imports for critical industrial inputs. He described it as a platform for national self-reliance, positioning Nagpur as a key player on the global map of clean-energy-linked industrial technologies.

Project Details and Regional Context

The downstream derivatives from coal gasification include syngas, ammonia, and hydrogen, which are essential for various industrial applications. The Adani Group also operates an underground coal mine at Gondkhairi, though specifics on coal sourcing for the gasification project will be determined later.

This marks the fifth coal gasification project planned in the region. Other key players include public sector mining company Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) and private firm New Era Tech. Balasaheb Darade, founder of New Era Tech, welcomed Adani's announcement, stating that the region is poised to lead India's energy transformation.

Land Acquisition and Expansion Plans

Sources indicate that the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) will acquire around 400 acres of land on behalf of the Adani Group for the proposed coal gasification project. This move underscores the state's support for large-scale industrial development.

In addition to this project, Adani revealed plans to expand aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) operations. The Adani Group, in partnership with Prime Aero—promoted by NCP leader Praful Patel's son Prajay Patel—operates Indamer Technic, which has an MRO facility in the MIHAN-SEZ. Regarding aircraft manufacturing, Adani noted that decisions will be made after consultations with partners, following a strategic tie-up with Embraer for setting up an aircraft manufacturing facility in India.

Event and Patronage

Jeet Adani made these announcements while attending the Advantage Vidarbha - Khasdar Audyogik Mahotsav in Nagpur, organized by the Association for Industrial Development (AID). This annual event is patronized by Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, highlighting governmental backing for industrial growth in the region.
