India Sets Record with 52,537 MW Power Capacity Addition

India Achieves Historic Power Capacity Addition of 52,537 MW in FY2025-26

In a landmark achievement for the nation's energy sector, India has added a record-breaking 52,537 megawatts (MW) of power generation capacity across all segments during the first ten months of the current fiscal year, FY2025-26. This represents the highest-ever capacity addition recorded in a single year, showcasing significant progress in meeting the country's growing energy demands.

Unprecedented Growth in National Power Infrastructure

The new capacity addition marks an impressive increase of more than 11% in India's total installed power capacity during this period. According to an official statement, this achievement surpasses the previous record of 34,054 MW set in FY2024–25, highlighting accelerated development in the power sector. With these additions, the country's total installed power generation capacity reached 520,510.95 MW as of January 31, 2026.

Renewable Energy Dominates New Capacity Additions

Renewable energy sources accounted for the bulk of the new capacity, contributing 39,657 MW, which is approximately 75% of the total addition. This underscores India's continued and robust push towards clean and sustainable energy solutions. Within the renewable sector, solar power led the expansion with an addition of 34,955 MW, followed by wind power at 4,613 MW.

Breakdown of Installed Power Capacity

The total installed capacity of 520,510.95 MW is composed of:

  • Fossil fuel-based sources: 248,541.62 MW
  • Non-fossil fuel sources: 271,969.33 MW

Within the non-fossil fuel segment, renewable energy accounts for 263,189.33 MW, while nuclear power contributes 8,780 MW. This distribution reflects a strategic shift towards greener energy alternatives.

State-wise Leadership in Renewable Energy

In the renewable energy sector, several states have emerged as leaders in installed capacity:

  1. Gujarat: Leads with 43,998 MW, particularly dominant in wind energy.
  2. Rajasthan: Follows closely with 43,798 MW, maintaining the top position in solar power.
  3. Maharashtra: Has an installed capacity of 31,382 MW.
  4. Tamil Nadu: Contributes 27,189 MW.
  5. Karnataka: Adds 26,138.62 MW to the national grid.

This state-wise performance highlights regional contributions to India's renewable energy goals and the decentralized growth of clean power infrastructure across the country.
